Dare的意思是敢於、冒險，它既可用作普通動詞，又可作情態動詞用（modal verb／auxiliary verb）。

作普通動詞用時，有各種時態形式的.變化，第三人稱單數現在時要加s，可以和帶to或不帶to的不定式連用。例如：

He dares to go to Africa alone．

他敢獨自去非洲。

Does he dare to tell her？

他敢告訴她嗎？

He doesnt dare（to）tell her．

他不敢告訴她。

He dared to go there．

他敢去那兒。

He didnt dare（to） take the risk．

他不敢冒這個險。

作爲普通動詞，dare也能表示挑戰的意思。例如：

He dared me to my face．

他當面向我挑戰。

作情態動詞用時，一般只用於疑問句和否定句中，第三人稱單數現在時不加s，無各種時態形式變化。例：

Dare he tell you the truth？

他敢不敢對你說出事實來？

He dare not tell me that sort of thing．

他不敢把那種事告訴我。
