1. 【原文】How about this pair?... How much are they? (L.53) 第二句中的they根據上下文應指代第一句中的this pair, 但爲什麼用they呢？

【精析】英語中的復形名詞表數量時通常與a pair of或數詞 ＋ pairs of連用，其中無論pair是單複數，通常都用複數代詞指代。trousers, shoes, glasses, scissors等一般用作複數形式，作主語時，謂語動詞也用複數形式。如：His trousers are black.他的褲子是黑色的。但英語中這些由兩個對稱部分合在一起構成一件物品的名詞，其前常與... pair of搭配表示數量，意爲"一雙；一條；一副"等，這時若在句子中作主語時，如果pair是單數形式，謂語動詞就用單數；如果pair是複數形式，謂語動詞就用複數。如：

That pair of scissors was so sharp that it cut his hands. 那把剪刀很鋒利，剪傷了他的手。

Two pairs of your trousers are still at the cleaner's. 你的兩條褲子還在洗衣店裏。

2. 【原文】 What size do you need? (L.53)如何詢問衣物的號碼尺寸？

【精析】就衣服、鞋類等尺寸大小提問時，常用句式What size ...?通常情況下不可用How much或How many來代替。如：

What's the size of your gloves?你的手套是多大號碼的？

類似的提問還有：

What's the population of Germany?德國人口是多少？

What's the price of the house?這所房子多少錢？

What's the number of the teachers in your school?你們學校有多少名教師？

3.【原文】 Are you excited about going to Beijing?(L.53) 這句的動詞是被動語態嗎？

【精析】不是。句中的excited是動詞excite的形容詞，在句中作表詞，可構成be excited about / at對......感到興奮，be excited to do做......感到興奮。如：

Ｔhe excited old lady soon calmed down. 那個激動的老婦人很快就平靜下來了。

4. 【原文】 It is a huge beautiful building. (L.56)句中的huge與big, large, great有什麼區別？

【精析】 huge的意思是"巨大的；龐大的"，一般表示體積大，超過一般標準，常用於具體的事物、空間、距離、程度、容量等。例如：

The huge rock on the top of the mountain looks like a monkey. 這座山頂部的那塊巨石看起來像只猴子。

The sun looks like a huge firing ball at the horizon. 太陽在地平線上看起來好像是一個巨大的燃燒着的火球。

big用法最爲普遍，表示面積、範圍、程度、強度或體積等是"大的"，通常只能用來形容有形的東西，較口語化。如：

This pair of shoes is too big for me.這雙鞋我穿太大了。

large的意思是"大的;巨大的"，特指寬度、數量之大。big和large常能互換。large一般不用於指人。如：

This room is large /big enough to hold twenty people. 這間房間足以容納20個人。

I found a large / big table in my room.我在我房間裏看到一張大桌子。

great大多用於指重要性、特性、能力或程度（通常含褒義），可以與不可數名詞連用。如：

She has a great many admirers. 她有很多愛慕者。

She lived to a great age. 她活到很大年紀。
