1、prefer,preference及would rather v.t. 寧願,更喜歡

He preferred the town (to the country).

I prefer pink to red..

Do you prefer living abroad (to staying home)?

We preferred to walk (rather than take the bus).

比較We’d rather walk than take the bus.

I should have preferred him to do it in a different vay.

Jane preferred her mother not to come.

有時也跟should型虛擬從句。

She preferred that he (should) do it in the kitchen.

Would you prefer that I (should) come on Monday instead of on Tuesday?

比較:Would you rather I came on Monday instead of on Tuesday?

would rather 之後用過去式型虛擬從句。

a preference for … 對……偏愛

I have a preference for green tea (rather than coffee). 我偏愛綠茶(不喜歡咖啡)。

2、set a side , put aside 及put away

①存儲:

I’ll have to set something aside for my retirement.

put

=I’ll have to put something away for my retirement.

②擱在一邊,不予理會:

At such a time of crisis, we must try to put aside all differences of party or class.

set

在這樣的危急關頭,我們必須設法放下黨派階級的分歧。

Professor Smith set aside the papers he was marking and reached for his cigarettes.

put

史密斯教授放下正在批改的試卷伸手去拿香菸。

3、contribute

v.i./v.t. 捐獻,捐贈

He often contributed to the church and the Red Cross.

The old teacher contributed 1000 yuan to the Hope Project.

contribution n.

make a contribution to …… 對……作出貢獻

4、besides and except

besides包括在內的“除了”,而except排除在外的“除了”。

比較:We study many subjects besides Chinese.

我們除了語文還學很多其他學科。(語文也學)

He spent much time on all the subjects except politics.

他在所有的學科上都花了很多時間除了政治。(他不願花時間在政治學科)

但這兩詞在否定句及疑問句中同義:

Nobody knows the truth except/besides him. Who can speak French besides/except you?

*besides還可作adv:

It’s too late to go out now. Besides, it’s beginning to snow.

**except與except for

The room has no furniture, except a chair.

The room is empty, except for a chair.

只用except時必須與句中所指的是同類,如第一句傢俱與椅子。但第二句房間與椅子不是同類,必須用except for:

You composition is well written except for some grammar mistakes.

作文寫得很好,除了有點語法錯誤。

The skirt fits her well, except for its dark color.

這裙子她很合身,可惜顏色太暗。

5、belong 解釋屬於時,一般只接to:

The book belongs to the school library.

Power should belong to the people.

What club does he belong to?

但表示應待位置時,用其他介詞:

You don’t belong in a science class.

The cups belong on the shelf.

The chair belongs in the corner of the bedroom.

表示合得來,適合等,也可以不用to:

She doesn’t belong among those girls who are vain of their beauty.

A person of great patience belongs in teaching.

He didn’t belong with the street gang.
