金嶽霖當年翻譯《毛澤東選集》時，譯到“吃一塹，長一智”，一時犯了難，不知如何下手。錢鍾書遂支招，譯作A fall into the pit,a again in your wit。譯文跟中文一樣對仗而且押韻，實在翻譯中的'上品了。

金嶽霖有個學生，叫做許淵衝。

許淵衝，生於江西南昌。從事文學翻譯長達六十餘年，譯作涵蓋中、英、法等語種，翻譯集中在中國古詩英譯，形成韻體譯詩的方法與理論，被譽爲“詩譯英法唯一人” ，北京大學教授，翻譯家。

在國內外出版中、英、法文著譯六十本，包括《詩經》、《楚辭》、《李白詩選》、《西廂記》、《紅與黑》、《包法利夫人》、《追憶似水年華》等中外名著。
