-'s所有格的構成方法

(1) 一般情況(包括單數名詞和不帶詞尾-s的複數名詞)加 -'s：

children's books 兒童圖書                  today's paper 今天的報紙

(2) 帶詞尾-s的複數名詞只加省字撇(')：

girls' school 女子學校             the Smiths' car 史密斯家的小汽車

【注】帶詞尾-s的單數名詞，通常仍加-'s：

the boss's plan 老闆的計劃                the hostess's worry 女主人的擔心

(3) 帶詞尾-s的人名，可加's 或只加省字撇(')：

Dickens' novels 狄更斯的小說                  Charles's job 查理斯的工作

不帶詞尾-s卻以噝音結尾者，一律加-'s：Marx's works 馬 克 斯的著作

(4) 用 and 連接的並列名詞的所有格要分兩種情況，即表示各自的所有關係時，要分別在並列名詞後加-'s，表示共同的所有關係時，只在最後一個名詞後加-'s：

Tom's and Jim's rooms 湯姆和吉姆(各自)的房間

Tom and Jim's room 湯姆和吉姆(共同)的房間

-'s所有格的用法

-'s 所有格主要用於有生命的東西，但有時也可用於無生命的東西，這主要見於：

(1) 用於表時間的名詞後：

tomorrow's weather 明天的天氣                  two days' journey 兩天的旅程

比較：ten minutes' break = a ten-minute break 10分鐘的休息

(2) 用於表國家、城市的名詞後：

America's policy 美國的'政策               the city's population 這個城市的人口

(3) 用於某些集合名詞後：

the majority's view 多數人的觀點               the government's policy 政府的政策

(4) 用於組織機構後：

the station's waiting-room 車站候車室

the newspaper's editorial policy 這家報紙的編輯方針

(5) 用於度量衡及價值名詞後：

a mile's distance 1英里的距離                  twenty dollar's value 20 美元的價值

【注】對於帶有連字元已轉化爲形容詞的度量衡，不能用所有格形式：

ten-minute walk 10分鐘的路程(比較：ten minutes' walk)

(6) 用於表天體的名詞後：

the moon's rays 月光                the earth's surface 地球表面

(7) 用於某些固定表達中：

a stone's throw 一箭之遙                  at one's wit's end 黔驢技窮

at arm's length 以一臂之距                 out of harm's way 在安全的地方

【注】名詞所有格並不一定表示所有關係，有時可能表示其他意義：

(1) 表類別：a doctor's degree 博士學位，children's hospital 兒童醫院

(2) 表動作執行者：Mr Smith's arrival 史密斯先生的到達

(3) 表動作承受者：children's education 兒童教育
