小說描寫的是一個年近六旬的老漁夫，在一次單身出海打魚時，釣到了一條大魚，卻拉不上來。老漁夫同魚周旋了幾天後，才發現這是一條超過自己漁船數倍的大馬林魚，雖然明知很難取勝，但仍不放棄。後來又因大馬林魚傷口上的魚腥味引來了幾羣鯊魚搶食，但老人仍不願就這樣放棄，最終突出重圍，將大魚帶回了漁港，讓其他漁夫佩服不已。

當我讀到“老漁夫想：這裏離海岸實在是太近了，也許在更遠的地方會有更大的魚……”時，我十分佩服這位老漁夫，因爲他這時已經打到了一些魚，但他沒有安於現狀，而是向着更大的目標前進。再看看我們，平時遇到一點小困難，我們都叫苦連天。我們是祖國的未來，應該像這位老人一樣胸懷大志，去追求更好、更大的目標。
